Regional disparities have been with us stretching back for ever into the past - I worked for the Training Services Agency - an arm of the Civil Service - for a short while (couldn't stand the bureaucracy so didn't stay for long ) back in the mists of time - I am 80 now
It is the Civil Service Union - which is hugely powerful - which enforces equal pay across the country. So until Government is prepared to take on the Civil Service Union, which Government won't, the nonsense of equal pay across England will continue. There is no hope of it changing this under a Labour Government, and a Tory Government will need another Thatcher, to take on the Union. If Thatcher could take on the miners (and the three day week which I lived through) a new Thatcher with real guts could take on the Civil Service Union. Otherwise forget it.
Free banking, i.e where Banks issue their own notes worked Inflation free for 100 years, and the UK where this was operative came to dominate the world economically. The currency was fixed in value against Silver (1 Pound Sterling Silver), there was no inflation. Interestingly with the explosion of Crypto currencies we seem set to move back into a period where the governments lose control of the money which will become of standard international value as with Bitcoin. It will be interesting to see how it develops
Interesting article. I’ve always considered the disparity to be down to spending. And the fact the further north you go the preconception of people unwilling to spend gets stronger!….apparently! As opposed to the south being more willing to spend. Spending means wealth. Those who spend have it and by definition spend it. Those who don’t spend either don’t have it or don’t spend it! It’s the ability to spend is the basic denominator for a successful economy as without spending the economy fails! The leveller of private snd public sectors is spending! Both sectors earn money to spend snd both survive because of that spending. So in my view there isn’t the case for the private sector paying for the public, that’s a misunderstood red herring! The irony is the poor and working class spend most or all of their money now to survive. It’s the rich who don’t spend all their money who don’t contribute monthly to spending! Not as much as the rest of us. Ti increase more taxes on us is counterproductive. What we need is a spending policy! To make money move faster and in more bulk from the top back down. That will increase tax revenue without the need for more taxes per say. Just gave Vat and make all money move! By spending. Be wealthy on the stuff bought not by money held and unspent on our monthly basis. That’s the only way to ensure a perpetual full flowing economy as without spending it doesent work! Let us free to earn as much as we can but have to spend it back! Just a thought! That’ll even us up.
