NHS App: good idea in theory but the NHSs biggest constituency is old people, and many old people struggle with the digital world. Some are not even on the internet, nor have mobiles.
Sorry David! I was agreeing but many OAPs use bank cards, or have to because of no giro pension payments any more! It’s just for data storage! That can be used to avoid an expensive NHS white elephant of a useless system. A bank account type system can hold data for physicians, chemist etc without a phone! So merely presenting it would be sufficient. That’s all I was trying to point out. Similar to paying for goods in a shop! Nice and easy just to present!
I agree David! But I can’t understand if we have bank accounts that work why can’t they use the same system to hold NHS details? Did we not bail them out post 2008 and didn’t we own one? Why do we need extra? We can use one card for everything!?? … or at least the same system , at least we know it works!
Great piece Callum. But, I don’t think Labour had any idea of their true goals pre ordained prior to the election to then instigate post election. The way it’s all been instigated has been amateur at best and bewildering to such a degree that back benchers, quite rightly, expressed their displeasure. Amazing for all the wrong reasons. Totally inept at worst and so makes us all worry for the next four years! Starmer and Reeves have reverted to the mistakes of the past thinking that cuts to spending must be the answer to balance the already unbalanced book left not by 14 years of Conservative austerity but, in my opinion 50 years of inept ability and poor leadership. Recently we have seen democracy in action with free votes by MPs on assisted dying and to a limited degree in the welfare bill recently where true views and opinions were properly aired and decisions were made accordingly. Democracy isn’t right or wrong it’s consensus as to decide right over wrong. To reach a judgement by their consensus. They come after the worst in my view of votes, Brexit! We left the EU on consensus based on lies. A promise of more spending on the NHS for instance. And the real costs of leaving were not aired. Not only that, the democratic process failed us by exiting on a vote of less than 50% of possible voters! And decision must be deemed invalid unless at least 50% agree to it, not less! It’s different than what happened. Leave voted 51% to 49% of those voted to leave! Undemocratic in my view. So we can see the best and worst of the Commons. In those three debates and votes. But votes are normally not on tight or wrong but what is probably better! I think we need more free votes and let consensus write policy. But I digress. Labour has no plan except more of the same in different ways, spending choices and cuts in other ways to pay for it! But still borrow the difference to plug the aching and ever expanding gap! Mainly because they have no idea what can be done and nor do they want to put that way into action. Reeves for example seems not to understand taxation. She’s not on her own, neither did anyone else before her! The Chancellor agonises about how to spend our tax take and fails to look up from that two dimension household budgetary book and see that if she makes the right or better decisions she can change the rules and regs to completely change that income stream so that’s it’s finally sufficient to pay for all our needs, NHS, defence and benefits! Tax is appreciated by millions but, understood by so few. For example , punters and professionals alike assume workers who earn income tax pay more in tax than non workers, pensioners and unemployed or benefits recipients. But that’s not strictly true! It’s not so much who earns it or pays it it’s how it is triggered. Workers don’t pay income tax or NI their employers do! It’s just calculated on wages. It’s the act of SPENDING by the employer on the employee that triggers the tax revenue. Workers and non workers who spend all their money each month pay as much tax as they can by way of VAT and Duty and Council tax etc. so workers and non workers pay their fair share of tax regardless of earning. It’s their SPENDING that’s the trigger. Likewise all tax is triggered by spending not by working per se. So if we know that tax is triggered by spending then instead of austerity the Chancellor must look to Spending as the answer to a higher tax take!?? It’s not higher taxes either it’s higher tax take from a more funded pot from which tax is taken!…. It’s called rightly an economy! It’s the goose that lays the golden egg. And it’s all about Spending! Funnily enough not earning. Earning is what we work for as a it’s Spending that’s the enjoyment. Not necessarily the working bit or the tax bit. So for happiness to be apparent spending is the key to everything good! So we need a SPENDING POLICY! Not a cutting policy! If the government spend more, make more spending happen in the economy to raise the amount in tax needed for the extra NHS or defence! Is that not clear!!?? Because it may be to me but, not to them! It’s not their fault but they need to listen and make the plan, not pretend they have one that will work when it’s blatantly wrong! Now I can hear the voices now, from the super rich…. “Well I don’t want to spend my money”… well tough! We all have to! And in a month!! So why not them? I say loudly! It’s only rules we need now. When you get tax taken without spending you get nothing in return. Nada! But when it’s spent you get something for it! Surely tax from that is better? Don’t take it. Let tax be earned from spending instead. And what would we do with the rich going abroad with it all? Bring back exchange controls. Don’t let the money out! Just hoods and people, not our money! That stays.now that’s democracy, the money for all to be won by earning or need. But to be enjoyed and spent. Be rich off the stuff you buy not holding on to money itself! Money that is held, unspent and unused is not taxed! OMG!!!! They can hold onto it for centuries and it’s not taxed! Why not!!! In fact have it taken by the exchequer if it’s not spent! That’s what I say! There is a plan worth debating. It will definitely produce the income Reeves needs in less taxation! Now that’s a win double Del Boy!… before I go, let’s just look at Growth’? What is it? Growth in population? Because surely we need more cash for more people? Or is it a growth of profit? And who benefits from that?? Or is it growth in sales, well who’s going to get that growth if no one’s got any money to spend?… or is it Growth in tax revenue? As I think it is. To raise tax revenue you need to turbo charge the pot with yes, you guessed it… money! Money to spend!! So again it’s back to spending and having the money to spend . Well that’s not the disabled or the poor, no! It’s those who have it, too much of it!! That’s who we must start with Starmer! Not protect them!! And then there is ‘investment’. Their answer to growth! Well I don’t know how that works? Firstly investing never has a guarantee of working. It can fail like HS2. And who pays for it? Us as always, like bailing out the Banks. We all pay via taxes. Except the rich? They avoid income tax and business tax and don’t spend all their money each month so pay nothing! Not a sausage! No tax at all! Well go and get the money from them not us! Investment is like borrowing. We have to pay it back and more! Interest and losses! Making the rich richer! His the hell does a democracy allow that? 5% of people holding 95% of money? That makes 95% of us working to pay taxes on only 5% of money? Our pot is 5% and theirs is 95% how is that bloody democratic!??? Answer me that Callum?
Fair point and agree about different government departments re-inventing the wheel (that might already exist in the private sector).

Brian: Not sure how this would help old people who have techphobia. Very many do not have on-line banking facilities.
